Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, is a neuro-developmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by difficulty in paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While some people may only exhibit symptoms of inattention or hyperactivity, most people with ADHD experience a combination of the two.
ADHD is one of the most commonly diagnosed neuro-developmental disorders, affecting about 10% of children. However, due to the overlap of symptoms with other conditions such as anxiety, depression, and learning disorders, diagnosis can be difficult, and many individuals may not receive the proper treatment.
The exact causes of ADHD are not well understood, but researchers have identified a few factors that may contribute to its development. These include genetics, environmental factors such as exposure to toxins during pregnancy, and differences in brain structure and function.
Treatment for ADHD typically involves a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. Stimulant medications such as Ritalin and Adderall are often used to help reduce symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity. However, these medications can have side effects and may not be effective for everyone. Behavioral therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can help individuals with ADHD learn coping strategies and improve their organizational and time management skills. Of all mental health illnesses, children with ADHD are often poorly treated by their teachers and caregivers who do not understand the illness. They are labeled as "bad" children who can't follow directions or listen. If your child has symptoms of ADHD it is imperative to have them evaluated and treated as soon as possible to minimize the emotional impact that negative labels can have on children (and people in general). I always take care to perform a thorough evaluation not just of ADHD symptoms but of all mental illness to rule out other conditions that may have similar presentations. A in depth evaluation is critical to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
